He wanted to discover the beauties of this country, admire its monuments, landscapes, and culture. He was also curious to meet the inhabitants and learn about their history.

He left Paris by train and crossed France, Switzerland, and northern Italy. He stopped in several cities, including Lyon, Geneva, Turin, and Milan. He visited cathedrals, museums, palaces, and gardens. He was amazed by the artistic and architectural richness of these places. He wrote in his journal: “Italy is a living museum, where every stone tells a page of history.”

Then, he continued his journey south and arrived in Venice, the city of canals and gondolas. He walked around St. Mark’s Square, where he saw the basilica, the bell tower, and the Doge’s Palace. He got on a gondola and sailed down the Grand Canal, where he admired the palaces and bridges. He wrote in his journal: “Venice is a dream, where every wave whispers a poem.”

He left Venice and headed for Florence, the city of the Renaissance and the arts. He visited the Duomo, the Baptistery, the Ponte Vecchio, and the Uffizi Gallery. He gazed at the masterpieces of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli, and Raphael. He wrote in his journal: “Florence is a masterpiece, where every painting reveals a beauty.”

He continued his journey to Rome, the eternal city and the city of the popes. He visited the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, the Pantheon, and St. Peter’s Basilica. He attended an audience with Pope Pius IX, who gave him his blessing. He wrote in his journal: “Rome is a glory, where every ruin bears witness to greatness.”

He ended his journey in Naples, the city of Vesuvius and pizza. He admired the volcano, which smoked in the distance, and the bay, which sparkled in the sun. He tasted the local cuisine, based on tomatoes, cheese, and pasta. He wrote in his journal: “Naples is a joy, where every smile expresses a sweetness.” He returned to France after six months of an unforgettable trip. He had seen so many wonders that he could not tell them all. He then decided to write a book about his Italian experience. He called it “Les Travailleurs de la mer” (Toilers of the Sea) and published it in 1866.
